McLaren 788HS Revealed as Final 720S Series Model

McLaren has revealed the 788HS, the final evolution of the supercar series that began with the 720S and continued through the 765LT and 750S. The car becomes only the third McLaren to wear the High Sport designation, following the MP4-12C HS and the MSO HS, and buyers can personalize their cars through McLaren Special Operations.

The 788HS uses McLaren’s M840T 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, producing 777 bhp (788 PS) at 7,500 rpm and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), with an 8,500 rpm redline. The engine runs lightweight forged pistons, ultra-low inertia twin-scroll turbochargers and twin fuel pumps. Combined with a dry weight of 2,789 lb, the car has a power-to-weight ratio of 614 bhp per tonne, the highest of the series. McLaren quotes 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0 to 124 mph in 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph. A unique engine mount calibration is fitted, and a revised quad-exit titanium exhaust pairs with updated induction and exhaust sound symposer systems.

The aerodynamic package is the most extensive applied to the platform, increasing downforce by 10 percent over the 765LT. It centers on an S-Duct hood, a raised active rear spoiler, a Formula 1-inspired rear diffuser and a multi-zone front splitter, with a louvred under-wing panel supporting cooling and aerodynamic efficiency. All of the HS aero components are carbon fiber, and buyers can specify full visual carbon fiber bodywork covering every exterior panel in gloss or satin. Coupe versions get a gloss black roof scoop.

Underneath, the 788HS runs McLaren’s linked-hydraulic Proactive Chassis Control III suspension with bespoke calibration and a front ride height 5mm lower than the 750S. Braking uses carbon ceramic discs derived from the McLaren Senna with six-piston forged aluminum monoblock front calipers and integrated cooling ducts. The car also introduces the first center-lock wheel system in the series, paired with a new Super Lightweight Forged Alloy wheel design. Inside, the cabin gets a lightweight carbon fiber center console, HS-specific upholstery with a unique perforation pattern and a dedication plaque, along with the column-mounted instrument binnacle, wheel-mounted powertrain and handling controls and McLaren Infotainment System II.
