Quick Verdict
Caring for a car with matte paint isn’t the same as caring for one with traditional glossy paint, and there are products you have to be careful about using because you might actually make the finish shiny. My Hyundai Ioniq 5 N came with matte paint from the factory, which puts me squarely in the target market for Chemical Guys Meticulous Matte Auto Wash, a soap built with zero gloss enhancers or waxes in it. Chemical Guys sent one over, and I’ve been running it as the contact wash right after the Hands Off pre-wash foam. It works, and it works well.
The complication worth getting out of the way first is that most car wash soaps, even the ones with wax in them, are perfectly safe on matte paint. There’s very rarely enough wax content in a soap to turn a matte finish glossy. So this isn’t a product rescuing you from a mistake you were about to make. What it is is a soap for owners who would rather be safe than sorry about a finish that really is sensitive to blemishes, and at $12.99 that peace of mind doesn’t cost much.
Matte Expectations
Matte surfaces are sensitive to blemishes in ways glossy paint simply isn’t, which is the entire reason a category of matte-specific detailing products exists in the first place. Pollution, water spots, dirt, dust, bird droppings, and insects all sit differently on a flat finish, and you can’t correct a matte panel the way you’d correct clear coat. Chemical Guys makes the case that normal soaps enhance unwanted shine on matte and satin finishes, which is the argument behind building a dedicated formula.
My own read is a little less dramatic than that. The wax content in a typical car wash soap isn’t enough to change how a matte panel reflects light, and I’ve never seen a bottle of quality shampoo ruin a flat finish. But matte paint is expensive to fix when something does go wrong, and there’s a group of owners who would simply rather eliminate the variable entirely. That group is exactly who this soap is built for.
Zero Gloss Attached
The formula itself is straightforward enough, a high-lubricity shampoo with no gloss enhancers, shine agents, or wax in it, which is the whole selling point. Chemical Guys rates it as safe on matte paint, satin finishes, and matte wraps, and says it won’t stain or discolor sensitive wrap. Dilution runs 1 to 3 ounces into a 5-gallon bucket for a traditional two-bucket wash, or 1 to 3 ounces into the solution tank if you’re going through a foam cannon or foam gun. It comes in a 16 oz bottle at $12.99, and the scent is bubble gum, for whatever that’s worth to you.
Second in Line
I ran it immediately after the Hands Off pre-wash, which is the order Chemical Guys intends for the two products, and it did exactly what you’d expect. It lays on nice and thick through the TORQ Big Mouth Max Release Foam Cannon connected to the TORQ Snubby Pressure Washer Gun, which is the same setup I used for the pre-wash step. From there it’s a normal contact wash with a mitt, a rinse, and drying.

Splitting Suds
Truth be told, it’s awfully hard to judge the performance of one car wash soap against another, assuming both are quality products to begin with. Could I tell you whether Meticulous Matte did a better job washing my car than another reputable soap would have? Not really, and I’d be suspicious of anyone who claims they can. The differences between good shampoos live somewhere below the threshold of what you can actually perceive standing in a driveway with a mitt in your hand.
What matters is that it works, and it works well. It gave my wash mitt a nice surface to glide across while pulling the dirt and contaminants off a finish I’m not willing to take chances with. That’s the whole job description for a car wash soap, and this one does it without any complaints.
Peace of Mind
Personally, I think this is a product designed to give matte paint owners peace of mind more than anything else, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You’re paying a couple of dollars over a standard Chemical Guys shampoo to remove a worry from the equation, and if you’ve spent real money on a matte finish or a wrap, that math check outs. Combined with the pre-wash, the two products do a fantastic job cleaning the Ioniq 5 N. After the rinse it’s straight to drying, where The Rag Company towels I tested earlier this year are still handling the last step.
