Whitfield Racing GM Cobalt Part 5

It has taken us a little time to run Jason Whitfield down, as you can imagine, he is extremely busy right now, given the fact that his new street car is up and running. We are happy to bring you some insight on where Jason is at with his build, and what his plans are. Not to mention, we have some pretty cool videos and pics for you to look at.

Tunerzine – We start off by saying good morning Mr. Whitfield, how are you?

Jason – Great man this build has been getting interesting to say the least, we are learning so much everyday and cant wait to get a full pass on this car.

Tunerzine – Well bring us up to date with what you have been up to.

Jason – Man, we have been slammed. I have been going to events, and running the car, as well as testing, as I really want to push the limits of this car. That doesn’t even include running my shop Whitfield Racing.

Let me take you through these videos first. I know a lot of people will like to see them and know what we are up to.

Lets start with Video 1 – In this video we are just doing some testing. We just got the car fired up – and are working out the kinks. You will notice that we are on the throttle a little to look for leaks and such.

The same thing goes for Video 2. At that point we were working on the tune start up and idle cal

On Video 3 – you will see us on the Dyno. Man was this forever fun! The Ecotec motor is a monster – and we got living proof of that when we strapped it down for the first time on our Dyno. We were seeing well over 800WHP in a matter of 3 runs – with not much of an effort..

Don’t get me wrong, we build lots of big powered street Honda’s and they make some serious power. This thing is just a different animal. It’s a monster for sure!

Tunerzine – You are giving us chills here. What kind of power are you looking to run in this car and what do you plan to do with it?

Jason – You know I started out with the idea of building one of the worlds fastest 4 cylinder street cars in full street trim, and that’s still our main goal. If you look at this car we have all the full interior and all the goodies inside etc. I want to drive this thing down the street and grab a burger. I also want to take it to shows and enter it into the show car contest, which we did at HIN LA – where we walked away with 3 trophies on our debut. In the end I wanted to make over 1,000whp and I wanted to do it consistently and safe. I also wanted to be able to take this car out to the track and campaign to be one of the worlds fastest street cars. The Cobalt and Ecotec motor is an incredible platform to do this with. Trust me, all of us here at Whitfield Racing have become believers…

Tunerzine – Man, you certainly have our attention! Keep going with your video breakdown.

Jason – OK, what you are going to see next on Video 4 is me taking the car to an event, so I can do some shakedown passes and testing etc. Really, I was extremely excited, and wanted to just get this thing out to the track and have some fun with it. And we did just that.. Video 4 shows a burnout – and make sure to listen to the announcer. I love that guy.

Video 5 – shows us running 11.02 on a shakedown run. Just trying to get everything dialed. I was just getting used to the automatic and the new car setup.

Now Video 6 and 7 are of the same run where I put a little more into it and ran a 10.03 @147MPH. Both videos are cool – a little bootleg but cool to watch. Video 6 has a great angle but the big pole at the end cut off where you can read the time. So that’s what Video 7 is for! Again remember these are still test passes so we are on low boost and not leaving the line very hard at all, but you can see that when you watch the video.

Keep in mind, this was us just getting going here. Single digit quarter mile times are not a problem. Man, it makes me just smile thinking about it. I am having a blast with this car. Working with great people etc. Oh, did I mention that we ran this all while running on Konig street wheels and Falken tires in the back. Yeah that was very fun to do.

Tunerzine – All of us over here are very happy for you, and it looks like you are off and running in the direction that you set out for now huh?

Jason – Yeah we are really starting to get our feet under us. We made the trip to NOPI Nationals in Atlanta, and you can see the car at that show from the pictures. That show was amazing. The amount of people there is just ridiculous! What a great time, and what a fun show to meet people at. I had tons of people asking questions about the car and how I did things etc. I had a blast sitting there in the GM Booth just educating people and meeting new fans. Lots of fun for sure! I even took a quick break to go test drive the Cobalt SS on the test track outside of the event. That was fun beating on that sucker. Trust me, that SS motor is a fun fun motor! I wouldn’t mind doing a little project with one of those suckers either.

Tunerzine – Looks like you were doing a TV interview there at NOPI. What was that all about?

Jason – Yeah that was great. That was NOPI Tunervision. They came by and wanted to check out the car – and interview me regarding it. Lots of fun. Hope it airs – you know how that stuff is. They film so much stuff, but not all of it makes the show. We will see!

Tunerzine – So what’s next?

Jason – More shows more shows more shows.. Just getting out there and meeting people, and going to car shows, and drag events. Learning more about the motor and platform etc.Just going all out for the rest of the year. Also magazines. I can’t forget about them. We are going to work and get the car shot for a magazine. More on that as we know what’s happening there.

Ohh and SEMA. Yeah SEMA baby… Looks like you may see us in the Mobil1 booth at SEMA..

Shhhh!!! Don’t tell anyone yet.

Tunerzine – Oh don’t worry Jason, your secret is safe with us! 😉

Jason – Ha Ha Ha… I hear ya…

Man, its all fun, it really is. I do have to admit though, that without the help of some great companies like Alpinestar, Konig Wheels, Falken Tires and GM Racing, I would not be where I am today with this project. I really appreciate their support.

Tunerzine – Jason it’s great running down, and I’m sure we will hear back from you soon.
