Whitfield Racing: GM Cobalt Part 2

Jason Whitfield Project Cobalt Buildup – Stage 2

Tunerzine : OK – Jason, take us through the progress of where you are at now with the car, from where we left off with you about a month ago.

Jason W. : Man!!! Where do I begin here! So much has happened here at Whitfield Racing, that I don’t even know where to start! Lots of cool things at the shop going on – but let’s move to the Cobalt.

OK, So – we have made some major progress here, from the last time that you saw my Project Cobalt. Really, we have been working heavily on the cage of the car. Yeah – just by looking at the pics you will see that this cage is not your dad’s backyard jobber. We went the distance and really wanted to do a cage that no one has ever seen before, and I think we kind of hit our target – seeing that the NHRA officials when they came over to check out the cage to make sure we were good and all, where like WOW!

We all looked at each other here at the shop, and just smiled at each other – as we knew that we had a winner here.

Here are some special specs on the cage that you may not be aware of. – Based off a Pro Stock style setup. The rules don’t call for a Pro Stock style of cage – unless you go 8.50’s or less. Ahh – yeah so. We even went one step further and put the pro stock cage around the passenger as well! – Most guys do the minimum required to get by, we did the maximum for both safety and looks. – Made out of Chrome’oly 4130N – Cage was made so we could fit 2 matching seats in the front for passenger and driver. – We also built the rear cage – so that we could accept the rear seat. – The whole cage was built to very close specs, because we are planning on running full interior in this car. Yep – we are building the ultimate streetcar here! – Added a quick release steering wheel, for ease of getting in and out, and to make it easier to work on the car. – We tied in both the parachute mount and the optional wheelie bars to the main cage. – For the car stability, we tied off the main cage A-Pillar’s – and went all the way to the headlights. – The passenger seat is still functional, as we built the cage to accommodate that. Basically if you remove the front passenger seat, part of the cage comes out so you can get back there easily.

There are a bunch of other little things on the cage that we did, but why bore you with all of that!

Tunerzine : OK, besides the cage, what else have you played with?

Jason W : Well, we are currently in the process of finishing up the chassis and engine wire harness. Hmm, lets talk about that for a second. We are pretty well known here at Whitfield Racing for our wire harnesses. OK, so the Fast XFI engine management system that we were going to run, comes with a universal harness, which we decided to toss out and create our own, for cleanliness, fitment, and WOW factor! People love seeing our harnesses and we love making them, because they just help so much in the long run.

Trust me – check out the pictures, they’re worth a million words!

On top of all that good stuff, we started on the custom Whitfield Racing Turbo Kit. We started off with a Full Race Turbo Manifold – those guys make an amazing manifold, and saved me a lot of time. The rest of it has been made in house, and has come along nicely!

Tunerzine : Sounds like you guys are having fun.

Jason W : You know what, to tell you the truth we are really starting to have some fun here. We can see this thing getting closer here, and just about ready to start testing. We have so many little tricks up our sleeves that I think people will really like. We have pushed ourselves on this project, and I believe it will show big time in the end.

I really just want to get out there and get in this car. I am so excited to get behind the wheel of the Cobalt – as I want to taste a bit of what all these other Cobalt racers are testing! Like I have said before, this Ecotec motor is just insane! It is so responsive and strong. I could go on and on for hours about how happy I am with this car and motor. Everyone needs one!

We should have some more exciting updates here next month. Lots of thrashing going on right now with the car. Stay tuned here to Tunerzine.com to check us out and all of the progress!

Tunerzine : Thanks Jason, we look forward to stage 3 of the buildup.

Is there anything else that you want to add to this?

Jason W : Well, I could not have done this without all of the great help from my crew at Whitfield Racing – Shanin Holladay, Chris Whitfield, Chris Bailey, Matt Whitfield, Paul Dillon, Kirk Fletcher and Rob Miller of Sinister Race Cars, Pauly Riviera of Pauly’s Race Cars.

Not to mention none of this would be possible without my sponsors – GM, Alpinestar, and Konig.
